India’s hopes of winning their first ICC title were doomed as Australia emerged victorious by 209 runs in this World Test Championship (WTC) final at The Oval.
The final day witnessed a dominant performance by Pat Cummins and his teammates, India’s batting lineup, restricting them to a mere 234 runs while chasing a daunting target of 444. Australia set the score on Day 1, with Travis Head and Steve Smith with superb batting skills, each scoring a century and their team to a formidable total of 469 runs in the first innings. India’s top-order batsmen struggled to make an impact, but Ajinkya Rahane’s gritty knock of 89, supported by Shardul Thakur and Ravindra Jadeja, enabled India to avoid the follow-on.
India displayed signs in the second innings, but a crucial 93-run partnership between Alex Carey and Mitchell Starc got Australia to a commanding score of 270/8 before they declared their innings. With a challenging target of 444, India ended Day 4 at 164/3, showing some resistance. However, on this final day, Australia’s Scott Boland made an immediate impact by getting both Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja in the same over. Kohli fell to an excellent slip catch by Steve Smith after scoring 49 runs, while Jadeja was caught behind for a duck. Cricket Updates Rahane played a few good shots before being removed by Mitchell Starc for 46. Unfortunately, Shardul Thakur, who had earlier scored a half century, failed to contribute on this time as he was dismissed without opening his scores
