Gautam Gambhir gives his take on Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s future in ODI cricket during Press Conference

Before departing for Sri Lanka for the much-anticipated white-ball series, India’s new head coach, Gautam Gambhir alongside chief selector, Ajit Agarkar addressed a press conference on Monday.

Gautam answered all the questions asked by the reporters with pure conviction. Among many questions, Gambhir was also asked about Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s future in ODI cricket.

The former left-handed batsman reckoned that the duo could go on to play till the 2027 ODI World Cup if they remain fit. However, for now, the two most important series are the Australia tour and the 2025 Champions Trophy.

“I think they have shown what they can deliver on the big stage, whether it’s the T20 World Cup or the 50-over World Cup as well. One thing I can be very clear of is that both those guys have a lot of cricket left in them. More importantly, with the Champions Trophy [in 2025] and a big tour of Australia [in November 2024], obviously they would be motivated enough. And then, hopefully, if they can maintain their fitness, the 2027 [ODI] World Cup as well.,” Gambhir said in Mumbai on Monday.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are part of the upcoming three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka.

‘But for Bumrah, we need to keep him fresh’- Gautam Gambhir

Gambhir also talked about Jasprit Bumrah’s importance in the team. Among all the players, Gambhir felt that Bumrah’s workload management needs to be addressed. Labeling him as a ‘rare talent’, Gambhir wants Bumrah to stay fit for important matches. However, Virat and Rohit are bound to play all the games as they have already taken retirement from T20 format.

“Workload management is surely important but maybe more for someone like Bumrah, who is an exceptional and a rare talent. But as far as batters are concerned, they should play. They should be available for most games. But for Bumrah, we need to keep him fresh. Workload management for fast bowlers becomes important. For Rohit and Virat, I think they can play more now that they have retired from T20I internationals.”

India are set to play three ODIs and as many T20Is against Sri Lanka, starting 27th July 2024. The three T20Is are scheduled to be played on the 27th, 28th, and 30th July. This will be followed by three ODIs, scheduled on the 2nd, 4th, and 7th August 2024.
