IPL 2024 Auction: Most expensive player sold year-wise ft. Mitchell Starc

The IPL 2024 auction was the platform for some of the prominent international cricketers to bag huge sum of money. Particularly the Australian pace duo of Mithcell Starc and Pat Cummins as both players breached the barricade of the INR 20-crore mark, which is the first time in the annals of IPL auction & go to most expensive players in IPL History.

The 10 IPL teams purchased a total of 72 players in the mini-auction for the 17th season with a collective amount spent was 230.45 crore. Only six players, including one Indian player (Harshal Patel), managed to seal a lucrative deal of INR 10 crore or more. List of expensive player in IPL auction year-wise

MS Dhoni (IPL 2008)

Just a year after leading leading an inexperienced Indian side to T20 World Cup title in the inaugural edition in Johannesburg, MS Dhoni became the most expensive player in the IPL 2008 auction after Chennai Super Kings bought his services for 9.5 crore. To make it more precise, the teams would have a total purse of onl 20 crore at that point.

Kevin Pietersen/Andrew Flintoff (IPL 2009)

The IPL 2009 showered wealth on Englishman with the prominent names such as Kevin Pietersen and Andrew Flitnoff fetched a big sum of INR 9.8 crore each. Pietersen was roped in by the Royal Challengers Bangalore while Flintoff went to Chennai Super Kings. Pietersen was also named captain of RCB but was later replaced by Anil Kumble midway of the season.

Shane Bond/Kieron Pollard (IPL 2010)

New Zealand fast bowler Shane Bond and West Indies all-rounder Kieron Pollard topped the charts of the IPL auction in 2010. While Bond was at the peak of his cricket career, Pollard was a promising player that would establish him as the best all-rounder in the league. Bond and Pollard were picked by Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians, respectively, for INR 4.8 crore.

Gautam Gambhir (IPL 2011)

Following India’s triumph in the 2011 World Cup, Gautam Gambhir, who was an integral member of the Men in Blue’s batting unit, earned the most bids in the first mega auction when all teams revamped their auction strategies. Gambhir was sold to KKR for a massive amount of 11.04 crore, making him the first player to breach the 10 crore mark in the league. He was appointed as the captain of Kolkata Knight Riders.

Ravindra Jadeja (IPL 2012)

Chennai Super Kings splashed out a hefty price of INR 12.8 crore for a young Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja. The decision has paid rich dividends with the Saurashtra-born player helping them to win three IPL titles (2018, 2021 & 2023).

Glenn Maxwell (IPL 2013)

A prodidy player from Victoria created buzz after fetching the most bids by Mumbai Indians, who were yet to win the IPL title at that point. Maxwell earned a decent sum of INR 6.3 crore from the Mumbai-based franchise following his breakthrough at international cricket for Australia in the white-ball formats.

Yuvraj Singh (IPL 2014)

World Cup winner Yuvraj Singh was in the IPL auction after his team Pune Warriors India’s aggreement was officially terminated by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on October 26, 2013. Yuvraj was sold to Royal Challengers Bangalore for a whopping sum of INR 14 crore which made him the most expensive player in the history of IPL at that point.

Yuvraj Singh (IPL 2015)

Yuvraj bettered his auction record in the next season after getting released by RCB. Delhi Daredevils (now Capitals) splashed another record-breaking price of INR 16 crore to acquire the star Indian all-rounder’s services.

Shane Watson (IPL 2016)

Shane Watson entered the auction after very long time owing to Rajasthan Royals’ two-year suspension from the IPL in the aftermath of the spot-fixing scandal. The senior Australian all-rounder was paid a heavy money of 9.5 crore by RCB for the next two years (9.5 cr each season) to strengthen their squad.

Ben Stokes (IPL 2017)

Ben Stokes participated in his first IPL auction after the international stardom he gained since his international debut for England in 2011. To Stokes’ own surprise, he hit the jackpot after the Sanjeev Goenka-owned Rising Pune Supergiant picked him in the auction for a whopping sum of INR 14.5 crore. This made him the most expensive overseas player in the all time IPL auction record.

Ben Stokes (IPL 2018)

Stokes was once again in the auction after the two-year term of RPSG ended in 2017, though that didn’t mean the England all-rounder won’t find a lucrative deal. Rajasthan Royals purchased him for a sum of INR 12.5 crore to make him first overseas player to finish as the most expensive player in IPL auctions for back-to-back season. Only Yuvraj Singh has managed this feat in the past.

Jaydev Unadkat/Varun Chakravarthy (IPL 2019)

The franchise paid heed to performances of the Indian domestic cricket and the top-performers were consequently rewarded in the IPL 2019 auction. Saurashtra fast bowler Jaydev Unadkat and Tamil Nadu leg-spinner Varun Chakravarthy turned out to be the most expensive players of the auction that year, both of them earning a lumpsum deal of INR 8.4 crores from Rajasthan Royals and Punjab Kings respectively.

Pat Cummins (IPL 2020)

Pat Cummins returned back to Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2020 IPL auction but not before bagging a hefty sum of INR 15.5 crore to make him the most expensive foreign player in the league history, going past Ashes rival Ben Stokes’ figures. IPL 2020 Auction.

Chris Morris (IPL 2021)

Chris Morris, in one of the biggest surprises of the IPL auction, turned as the most expensive player in the IPL auction after Rajasthan Royals won the bids of INR 16.25 crores to obtain the services of the South African all-rounder.

Ishan Kishan (IPL 2022)

Ishan Kishan was the most expensive player of the IPL 2022 mega auction with his old team Mumbai Indians shelling out a huge sum of INR 15.25 crore. He only missed to break Yuvraj Singh’s record by just a few more bids to add the tag of most expensive Indian player of IPL.

Sam Curran (IPL 2023)

Sam Curran snapped the jackpot in the mini-auction of IPL 2023 Auction where all-rounders were being paid handsomely. He was sold to Punjab Kings for a record-shattering price of INR 18.5 crore. his fabulous deal came just after the youngster bagged the Player of the Tourament in England’s victorious ICC T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia.

Mitchell Starc (IPL 2024)

Mitchell Starc participated in the IPL auction after a span of five years and his sensational form in the World Cup only added to the success. Starc was sold to KKR for a whopping amount of INR 24.75 crore, making him the only other player after compatriot Pat Cummins (20.50 crore) to bag more than 20 crore in an IPL auction in the same event.
