Captain of Indian Cricket Team – Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma is the current captain of the Indian Cricket Team across all three formats.  He is currently leading India in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024.

Having played for the Indian Cricket Team for more than a decade now, Rohit Sharma has developed a massive fan following across the globe. The ‘Hitman’ has scored more than 10,000 runs in ODIs and over 4000 runs in Test cricket.

Under his leadership, India reached the final of the 2003 World Cup in India. Unfortunately, India lost the final against Australia but his team received appreciation by one and all for their outstanding performance throughout the tournament.

From a middle-order batter to an aggressive opener – Rohit Sharma’s International Cricket Journey

Rohit Sharma made his debut in international cricket in a one-day international game against Ireland on 23rd June 2007. He batted at number seven in that game and India won the game by nine wickets.

Much to his delight, he made his way into India’s T20 World Cup-winning squad in 2007 under MS Dhoni’s captaincy. Rohit Sharma scored his maiden international century against Zimbabwe on 28th May 2010. Unfortunately, he couldn’t be part of the squad for the 2011 World Cup but made a phenomenal comeback after that.

Rohit Sharma’s career saw a phenomenal rise after he began opening for the team. The shift began in the 2013 ICC Champions League trophy when Rohit was asked to open alongside Shikhar Dhawan.

He dished out phenomenal performances as an opener and later became a permanent opener for the side. Later, that year, Rohit Sharma smacked his maiden double-century in one-day cricket, scoring 209 off just 158 balls against Australia.

The following year, Rohit Sharma recorded his name in history books by smashing the highest-ever individual score in one-day international cricket. The Mumbai Indians former captain smashed 264 runs in just 173 balls, including 33 fours and nine sixes.

Rohit Sharma- the captain that everyone adores

After leaving his mark on the global stage by winning the trophy with Mumbai Indians in the IPL in 2013, 2015, and 2017, Rohit Sharma was appointed as the captain of Team India for the first time in 2017 against Sri Lanka. He led the team to victory with a scoreline of 2-1.

Once again in the absence of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma was tasked to lead the Indian Cricket Team in the tri-series between Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and India in 2018. India went on to win the series after defeating Sri Lanka in the final. Under Rohit’s captain, India also emerged to triumph in the 2018 Asia Cup.

The Board of Control for Cricket appointed Rohit Sharma as the full-time captain in 2022. Rohit has been leading the Indian team successfully, since.

Following India’s Test series loss against South Africa in January 2022, Virat Kohli stepped down as Test captain. Thus, Rohit Sharma became India’s full-time captain in all three formats. He led India to victory in the 2023 Asia Cup, defeating Sri Lanka in the final.

He also helped Team India to secure a spot in the World Cup 2023 final without losing a single match. However, India faced defeat against Australia once again in the World Cup 2023 final.

Under his leadership, India would be hoping they end the ICC title drought and win the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024 trophy.
