Shamar Joseph will play in place of Mark Wood
It has been informed through a press release issued by Lucknow Super Giants on Saturday, February 10, that Shamar Joseph will be seen playing in the upcoming season in place of Mark Wood. It was also mentioned in the press release that Joseph will receive 3 crore rupees to play for Lucknow in IPL 2024. This amount is quite substantial considering his IPL debut season, and he certainly deserves it one way or another. However, the reason for replacing Mark Wood has not been disclosed yet.
However, according to ESPNcricinfo, a report suggests that Mark Wood may have been barred from playing in IPL 2024 by his cricket board (England and Wales Cricket Board, ECB) for workload management reasons. This is because this year in June, the T20 World Cup is scheduled, and England team also has to host Test series against West Indies and Sri Lanka during the English summers. Recently, ECB had also prevented another fast bowler, Jofra Archer, from participating in the IPL 2024 auction.
It is noteworthy that Mark Wood was with Lucknow Super Giants since 2022. He was bought by the team for 7.50 crore rupees. However, he couldn’t play due to injury. Then he made his entry into IPL 2023. During this time, Wood took 11 wickets in four matches. Wood has only played a total of five matches in the IPL so far. He played his debut match in 2018.
International debut of Shamar Joseph
Shamar Joseph recently played his first international match against Australia. In that match, he announced his arrival on the world stage by taking 5 wickets in the very first innings. In his very next match, he took 8 wickets, leading the West Indies team to a historic victory. His impactful bowling played a crucial role in West Indies’ win in the Test match played in Gabba. In the Gabba match, West Indies managed to win a Test match in Australia for the first time since 1997.
24-year-old Shamar Joseph has only played 2 Test matches so far, in which he has taken 13 wickets. Additionally, he has 34 wickets in 7 first-class matches. While in 2 List A matches, he has taken 2 wickets. However, he has not achieved success in any of the 2 T20 matches he has played so far. So it remains to be seen how he will perform for Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2024.
