5 players who underperformed in IPL 2023 but went for big bucks in auction

The IPL 2024 auction was the first-ever event that took place outside of India at the Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai. This was the third and final year of the three-year contract between the players and the teams and we might witness a mega auction next year.

A total of 333 players were there in the auction list released by BCCI. These players were competing for 77 slots which were available with the 10 franchises. The IPL 2024 auction saw Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad breaching the INR 20 crore mark to pick Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins, respectively.

Some of the uncapped players were picked for a hefty sum of money. A few overseas players were rewarded for their performance in the ODI World Cup. Some players had a mediocre last season but managed to start a bidding war. Here we are discussing 5 players who underperformed in IPL 2023 but went for big bucks in auction:

5. Rovman Powell

Delhi Capitals picked Rovman Powell for INR 2.8 crore in 2022 and scored 250 runs in 14 matches. Last season, he scored just seven runs in three matches. This year, Rajasthan Royals paid a price of INR 7.4 crore to pick Powell for their team.

He played eight matches for the Kolkata Knight Riders last season and managed to pick just a single wicket. Umesh had an economy of 9.95. Gujarat Titans have picked Umesh for the upcoming edition of the tournament and shelled out INR 5.8 crore. They became the first team to ever spend more than INR 5 crore on Umesh since he made his IPL debut in 2010.

2. Jaydev Unadkat

He played for the Lucknow Super Giants last season and was picked for a price of INR 50 lakh. He could feature in just three matches before getting injured and was ruled out of the tournament. Undakat has been picked by Sunrisers Hyderabad for a price of INR 1.6 crore and fought a battle with Capitals. He has taken 10 wickets in the last three seasons so far.

1. Harshal Patel

He picked 14 wickets in 14 matches at an average of 32.42, an economy of 9.65, and a strike rate of 20.14 last season. He was released by Royal Challengers Bangalore and was in the auction pool with a base price of INR 2 crore.
