5 big names who were once traded by IPL teams

The IPL 2024 auction took place on Tuesday, November 19, at the Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai. A total of 72 players were sold in the auction, out of which 30 were overseas players. The 10 IPL teams spent over INR 230 crore in this mini-auction.

The IPL teams still have the option to make some crucial changes to their squad using the trading window. The trading window for a particular season opens up a month after the preceding season gets over, and it remains open until a week before the auction date. The window gets open again a day after the auction proceedings are done and will remain open till a month before the start of the next season.

This year, we saw Mumbai Indians bringing back Hardik Pandya from Gujarat Titans and named him the skipper of the squad. They traded Cameron Green to Royal Challengers Bangalore to get the purse value required for the Panday deal to conclude. Here is a list of 5 big names who were once traded by IPL teams:

5. Ravichandran Ashwin

Ravichandran Ashwin was one of the two captains who were traded before the IPL 2020. Punjab Kings (fka Kings XI Punjab) traded Ashwin to Delhi Capitals and received INR 1.5 crore. Along with the money, Punjab also grabbed the services of Jagadeesha Suchith from the Capitals.

Ashwin was bought by the Punjab franchise in 2018 for a hefty sum of INR 7.6 crore. Under Ashwin, Punjab won 12 out of 28 matches and failed to qualify for the playoffs both seasons. He picked 25 wickets in 28 matches across two seasons with the franchise at an average of 32.40.

4. Quinton de Kock

Royal Challengers Bangalore picked Quinton de Kock for a price of INR 2.8 crore during the IPL 2018 auction. He played eight matches for the franchise and scored 201 runs at an average of 25.12 and a strike rate of 25.12.

Before the start of the next season, RCB decided to trade de Kock to Mumbai Indians for the amount at which he was bought in the auction the previous year. In two out of the three seasons that de Kock was there with MI, he scored over 500 runs. He left the franchise in 2022 and had amassed 1329 runs by that time in 43 matches at a strike rate of 131.32.

3. KL Rahul

KL Rahul made his IPL debut with Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2013 before he was picked by Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2014 auction. Rahul played for the franchise in 2014 and 2015. He scored 308 runs in 20 matches during his time at the Sunrisers.

In 2016, Sunrisers decided to trade Rahul to RCB. 2016 was a successful year for Rahul and he scored 397 runs in 14 matches at an average of 44.11 and a strike rate of 146.49. He was the third-highest run-scorer for RCB behind Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers.

2. Shikhar Dhawan

Shikhar Dhawan made his IPL debut with Delhi Capitals (fka Delhi Daredevils) and scored over 300 runs in 14 matches. In 2009, Daredevils decided to trade Dhawan to MI and got Ashish Nehra in return. In 2011, Deccan Chargers picked Dhawan in the auction.

Dhawan moved to Sunrisers Hyderabad after the Chargers were terminated by BCCI. Before the 2019 auction, Dhawan’s career took a full circle as he was traded by Sunrisers to the Capitals. In return, Sunrisers got the trio of Vijay Shankar, Shahbaz Nadeem, and Abhishek Sharma. Dhawan finished as the second-highest run-scorer for the Sunrisers.

1. Hardik Pandya

Hardik Pandya’s move to Mumbai Indians from Gujarat Titans has been regarded as one of the biggest trades to ever happen in IPL’s history. Pandya made his IPL debut with Mumbai Indians in 2015. He played for the franchise till 2021 and scored 1476 runs and took 42 wickets.

During the IPL 2022 auction, MI decided to retain Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, and Kieron Pollard. Pandya was released and was picked by the new-entrant Gujarat Titans. Under Pandya’s captaincy, the Titans won the IPL trophy in their first attempt and finished as the runner-up last season.

The Titans traded Pandya to MI before the IPL 2024 auction and he was named the captain of the team, replacing Rohit Sharma.
