The IPL 2024 auction saw a record-breaking bid of INR 24.75 crore for Australian speedster Mitchell Starc by two-time tournament winners Kolkata Knight Riders. This marks the return of the left-arm quick to the cash-rich league after nine seasons.
A total of 72 players were sold to all 10 franchises among the 77 combined slots available before the mini-auction. A staggering amount of INR 230.45 crore was spent by all teams in the IPL 2024 auction at the Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai.
Indian medium pacer Harshal Patel was the most expensive player in the event from the home team after Punjab Kings shelled out a lucrative sum of INR 11.75 crore. However, Harshal isn’t the highest-purchased Indian player in the overall history of the IPL auction. Let’s have a look at the three most expensive Indian players in the IPL auction of all time.

3. Yuvraj Singh & Deepak Chahar (14 crore)
Yuvraj Singh was the most demanding all-rounder during his formative years, particularly after winning the Player of the Series award in India’s historic 2011 World Cup. The star Indian player became the most expensive player in the IPL 2014 auction after Royal Challengers Bangalore acquired his precious services for a enormous price of INR 14 crore.
Indian fast bowler Deepak Chahar fetched the same bids from Chennai Super Kings in the IPL 2022 mega auction after releasing him under the fresh norms. Unfortunately, a series of injuries in the build up of the season ruled out the Rajasthan bowler from the complete IPL 2022. Yet, he was retained for the same hefty amount in the following season.
2. Ishan Kishan (15.25 crore)
The explosive left-handed top-order batter wasn’t among the potentials to be retained by Mumbai Indians in the retention window ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction. The new auction rules permitted each franchise to retain not more than four players before the auction.
Mumbai Indians opted to keep Rohit Sharma, Kieron Pollard, Suryakumar Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah while releasing the likes of Kishan, Hardik Pandya, Krunal Pandya and Quinton de Kock from their core squad. Although MI couldn’t get back the Pandya brothers, the franchise didn’t shy away from breaking the bank to ensure Kishan returned back at the Wankhede Stadium.
Kishan was purchased for a staggering amount of INR 15.25 crore that made him the most expensive player of the IPL 2022 auction.
1. Yuvraj Singh (16 crore)
Yuvraj Singh shattered his record in the auction just a season later. After RCB released him from their squad ahead of the 2015 auction, Delhi Daredevils (now Capitals) bought the flamboyant Indian all-rounder for a record-breaking price of INR 16 crore.
Yuvraj held the bragging rights of being the most expensive player sold in the IPL auction for six years until South African all-rounder Chris Morris earned an astonishing bid of INR 16.25 crore from the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL 2021 auction.
