The IPL 2024 Auction took place on Tuesday, December 19, at the Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai. It was the first time that the auction was held outside of India. Each team had a budget of INR 100 crore, an increase from last year’s 95 crore.
The 10 teams had a maximum of 77 slots before entering the IPL 2024 auction. However, at the end of the auction, only 72 slots were filled, and the teams still had a total of INR 32.5 crore left with them. This was the first time the INR 20 crore mark was breached in an auction, and it happened twice.

5. Karun Nair
He went unsold during last season and was brought in as a replacement for KL Rahul by Lucknow Super Giants. Nair had set a base price of INR 50 lakh for the IPL 2024 auction, but he went unsold again.
Nair had parted ways with Karnataka for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2023 and joined Vidarbha. He had a decent outing for his new team and scored 218 runs in seven games at a strike rate of 152.44.
4. Philip Salt
The wicketkeeper-batter made his IPL debut last season with Delhi Capitals. He got a chance to play in nine matches and scored 218 runs at an average of 27.25 and a strike rate of 163.91, including two half-centuries.
Salt was one of the 11 players released by the Capitals before the IPL 2024 auction. He had a base price of INR 2 crore, the same as last year. Salt scored his maiden T20I century against West Indies in the third T20I of the five-match series. He has a strike rate of over 150 in six T20I matches this year, but these stats couldn’t help him find a franchise for the upcoming edition of the tournament.
3. Josh Hazlewood
The BCCI had confirmed to franchises that Josh Hazlewood was only available to play in the IPL from the first week of May. He was expected to miss the first five weeks of the cash-rich league due to personal reasons. This was probably the only reason Hazlewood couldn’t find a team for IPL 2024.
Hazlewood is currently the highest-ranked Australian bowler in ICC rankings. He is the only Australian bowler with over 20 wickets in T20Is since 2022. However, Hazlewood could play only three matches last season.
2. Rassie van der Dussen
Rassie van der Dussen had a great outing in the ODI World Cup and was the second-highest run-scorer for the Proteas. He made 448 runs in 10 matches at an average of 49.77. However, van der Dussen couldn’t find a team for the second time this year with a base price of INR 2 crore.
Van der Dussen played for Rajasthan Royals in the 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League. He featured in three matches for the team and could make only 22 runs at a strike rate of 91.67.
1. Steve Smith
The former Australian captain has played in 103 matches in the Indian Premier League so far and has scored 2485 runs at an average of 34.51. Smith last played in IPL during the 2021 edition and didn’t find a buyer in 2022.
He didn’t participate in the IPL 2023 auction and didn’t find a team again in the IPL 2024 auction. He had a base price of INR 2 crore. Smith had a great outing in the Big Bash League last year and scored 346 runs in just five matches as an opener.
