The IPL 2024 Auction took place on Tuesday, December 19, in Dubai. A total of 333, including 119 overseas players, went under the hammer. The maximum number of slots available with all 10 franchises was 77.
There were 214 Indian players available in the auction pool for the franchises. Over the years, franchises have burned a lot of cash in the min-auction to fill gaps in their squads. This year was no different.

At the end of the day, a total of five players were there who were sold for INR 10 crore or more. This auction also saw the teams breaching the 20-crore mark for the first time since the inception of the league. Here is a list of the top 5 costliest buys at IPL 2024 auction:
5. Alzarri Joseph (INR – 11.50 Crore)
The 27-year-old Caribbean pacer was picked by Royal Challengers Bangalore for a whopping amount of INR 11.50 crore. Joseph made his IPL debut in 2019 with Mumbai Indians and took six wickets in three matches that year.
Gujarat Titans brought Joseph during IPL 2022 Auction for a sum of INR 2.4 crore. He played 16 matches for the franchise in the next two years and took a total of 14 wickets. He was one of the two overseas pacers brought by the Faf du Plessis-led side in the IPL 2024 auction and might feature in the playing 11 regularly.
4. Harshal Patel (INR 11.75 Crore)
Punjab Kings shelled out INR 11.75 crore to get the services of Harshal Patel for the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League. Harshal has been playing in IPL since 2012 and delivered a breakout performance in 2015 when he took 17 wickets at an average of 19.29.
The best of Harshal Patel came during the 2021 edition of the league when he took 32 wickets in 15 matches at an average of 14.34. Harshal will likely lead the Kings’ bowling attack along with Arshdeep Singh.
3. Daryl Mitchell (INR 14 Crore)
Daryl Mitchell finished as the fifth-highest run-scorer in the ODI World Cup 2023 with 552 runs in nine innings, including two centuries and half-centuries each. He was rewarded with an INR 14 crore contract by Chennai Super Kings for the upcoming edition of the tournament.
Mitchell has batted from 2nd to 7th position for the Kiwis in 56 T20I matches so far and has taken eight wickets as well. Mitchell can be the like-to-like replacement for Ben Stokes in CSK’s playing 11.
2. Pat Cummins (INR 20.50 Crore)
The Australian skipper set his base price as INR 2 crore for the IPL 2024 auction. Chennai Super Kings opened the bidding for Cummins and fought a decent battle with Mumbai Indians till the INR 4.8 crore mark.
Royal Challengers Bangalore jumped with a bid of INR 5 crore, and CSK remained in the bidding war till INR 7.8 crore. Sunrisers Hyderabad jumped in to ultimately pick Cummins for a price of INR 20.5 crore. Cummins became the first-ever player to breach the 20 crore mark in IPL’s history.
1. Mitchell Starc (INR 24.75 Crore)
Mitchell Starc became the most expensive player in the IPL 2024 auction after Kolkata Knight Riders shelled out INR 24.75 crore for him. Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians bid for Starc till the INR 9.6 crore mark, after which both the teams dropped.
KKR and the Gujarat Titans fought one of the most intense battles in the IPL auction’s history. KKR finally sealed the deal after making a bid of INR 24.75 crore. This will be Starc’s second stint with KKR. The two-time champions had shelled out INR 9.4 crores for Starc in the IPL 2018 auction, but the left-arm pacer missed that season due to tibial bone stress in his right leg.
