Legendary Sri Lankan opener, Sanath Jayasuriya has heaped massive praise on Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Sanath Jayasuriya termed the Indian duo as the ‘best players in the world’. He reckons that their absence in T20 internationals, along with, Jadeja will be a huge loss for India.
Jayasuriya further said that Sri Lanka can take advantage of the trio’s absence in the upcoming three-match T20I series.
“Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are the best players in the world. Looking at their talent and the kind of cricket they have played we all know where they belong, along with Jadeja,” Jayasuriya said.
“Their absence will be a loss to the Indian team and we have to take maximum advantage out of that.” he added.
Suryakumar Yadav set to lead Indian team in T20I series against Sri Lanka
The T20I series between India and Sri Lanka will begin on 27th July, Saturday. The second and third T20 match will be played on 28th and 30th July, respectively. India’s three finest players, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravindra Jadeja took retirement from T20 internationals after India’s 2024 T20 World Cup triumph in West Indies.
Head coach, Rahul Dravid also called it quits from his position along with his support staff. Former Indian opener, Gautam Gambhir has been appointed as the new head coach, while Suryakumar Yadav is the new T20I captain of the Indian team.
Suyakumar Yadav’s appointment as the new T20I captain came as a bit of a surprise as Hardik Pandya was expected to take on the reigns from Rohit Sharma. However, keeping in mind Pandya’s tryst with injuries in the past, the baton was handed to Suryakumar Yadav.
Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja will continue to represent the country in the other two formats. The trio will be back in the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka, which will be played right after the T20I series.
Talking of the Sri Lankan camp, Charith Asalanka has been appointed as the new captain of the T20 team. Recently, Wanindu Hasaranga resigned from his position as the captain.
Asalanka, who led Jaffna Kings to the Lanka Premier League 2024 title, has replaced Hasaranga. The upcoming T20I series against India will be his first assignment as a skipper.
