Steve Smith retires from ODI cricket after Champions Trophy 2025 elimination

Australian cricketer Steve Smith has announced his retirement from One Day International (ODI) cricket after his team lost to India in the Champions Trophy 2025 semi-final on Tuesday. The 35-year-old scored 73 runs in the match and later informed his teammates that it was his last ODI. However, he will continue playing Test and T20 cricket for Australia.

“It has been a great ride, and I have loved every minute of it,” Smith said. “There have been so many amazing times and wonderful memories. Winning two World Cups was a great highlight along with the many fantastic teammates who shared the journey.”

Smith also revealed that he wants to give younger players a chance before the 2027 World Cup. “Now is a great opportunity for people to start preparing for the 2027 World Cup, so it feels like the right time to make way,” he said. “Test cricket is my priority, and I am looking forward to the World Test Championship Final, the West Indies tour in winter, and then playing against England at home. I feel I still have a lot to give in Test cricket.”

Cricket Australia’s Chairman of Selectors, George Bailey, praised Smith’s achievements. “We fully understand and support Steve’s decision to retire from One Day International cricket,” Bailey said. “His record as a batter is outstanding, and winning two World Cups makes him one of Australia’s great ODI players.”

Smith began his international career in 2010 as an all-rounder leg-spinner. In addition to his batting achievement, he had 28 ODI wickets. He was awarded Australia’s ODI Player of the Year in 2015 and 2021 and was also chosen in the ICC Men’s ODI Team of the Year in 2015.
