Shubman Gill has been appointed the vice-captain of India’s squad for the Champions Trophy 2025. He is likely to lead India against New Zealand in case Rohit Sharma is not fit to play. If that happens, Gill will make his captaincy debut for India in ODIs.
Gill captained India in the five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe last year. India won the series by 4-1 after losing the first game of the series. Gill is the captain of the Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League.
Gill played his first ODI game in Dubai during the first match of the Champions Trophy against Bangladesh. He remained unbeaten on 101 runs off 129 deliveries and won the Player of the Match award.

- 23 February 2025 vs Pakistan: Gill opened the innings for India against Pakistan. It was his fourth ODI against the arch-rival. India lost the wicket of Rohit Sharma early in the fifth over. Gill was joined by Virat Kohli in the middle. These two added 69 runs for the second wicket. Gill was dismissed in the 18th over after scoring 46 runs off 52 deliveries. Conclusion
Gill has not played a lot of matches in Dubai since making his ODI debut in 2019. He has been a regular in the Indian side since 2022. In 2023, he made 1584 runs in 29 games at an average of 63.36 and a strike rate of 105.45. He hit five centuries and nine half-centuries and was in terrific form. This year, he has already hit two centuries and half-centuries each in five outings. Considering his previous record against New Zealand, Gill will be a key player for India in this upcoming game and the semi-final as well.
