After winning the toss, the English skipper Jos Buttler, who is playing his last match as the team’s white ball captain chose to bat first but had a tough start. South Africa’s fast bowler Marco Jansen troubled them early, dismissing their opener Phil Salt for 8 runs in the 1st over of the powerplay. He then dismissed Jamie Smith in the third over, putting England under pressure.

Joe Root’s knock 37 off 44 balls helped the English post a total of 179, which happens to be the lowest total in the history of the Champions Trophy.
The Proteas’ Marco Jansen and Wiaan Mulder both picked a three wicket haul to dismiss the entire England’s team, followed by Keshav Maharaj who also picked two wickets.

Speaking in the mid innings, Keshav Maharaj reflected on South Africa’s Performance against England in the first innings.

Keshav Maharaj noted, “We were quite brilliant with our execution and plans. A bit sloppy in the field though to be honest. I was happy with the way I bowled but the foundation was laid by the fast bowlers. We know the English batters can take the game away, so that foundation was key to get early wickets. Allowed me to get some flight and guile into my bowling. My first wicket was a brilliant catch, and then Livingstone’s delivery was a nice setup, came out of the hand very nicely.”
