MS Dhoni to Lead CSK Again After Gaikwad’s Ruled Out of IPL 2025 – MS Dhoni will captain Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for the rest of IPL 2025. This comes after Ruturaj Gaikwad was ruled out of the tournament due to an elbow fracture. CSK head coach Stephen Fleming confirmed the news on Thursday, April 10. It was announced a day before CSK’s home match against Kolkata Knight Riders.

When injured Ruturaj Gaikwad

Gaikwad got hit on his elbow while facing Tushar Deshpande during CSK’s match against Rajasthan Royals on March 30. He still played in the next two games against Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings. But scans have now revealed a fracture in his elbow.

‘Ruturaj is ruled out of the tournament’ – Stephen Fleming

“Unfortunately, Ruturaj is ruled out of the tournament,” said Fleming. “He got hit in Guwahati and played through pain. The X-ray was unclear, but the MRI confirmed the fracture. We’re disappointed and feel bad for him.”

With Gaikwad out, Dhoni will take charge again. Fleming joked, “We have an uncapped player in MS Dhoni who will take over as captain for the remainder of the IPL.”

The injury is a big blow for CSK. The team has lost four of their five games so far and sits ninth in the points table. Gaikwad has been a key batter and was CSK’s top run-scorer in three of the last four seasons.

‘He knows the team needs him right now’ – Fleming on Dhoni

Dhoni, now 43 years old, has led CSK through most of its IPL journey. He briefly handed the captaincy to Ravindra Jadeja in 2022 but took it back midway through the season. Before IPL 2024, Dhoni stepped down again, letting Gaikwad take over.

Now, MS Dhoni returns to help CSK bounce back. “He knows the team needs him right now,” Fleming said. “Rutu didn’t want to leave, but Dhoni had no hesitation in stepping up.”

Fleming also spoke about finding Gaikwad’s replacement. “We’ll look within the squad first. We have good players waiting. But we may also consider other options for the future.”

Dhoni has led CSK in 235 of their 268 matches. Under his captaincy, CSK won five IPL titles and two Champions League T20 trophies. They have reached the IPL final 10 times and finished outside the top four only twice.
