With the tenure of Rahul Dravid as head coach of the Indian cricket team set to conclude after the T20 World Cup 2024, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had previously invited applications for the next head coach.
Recent media reports suggest that Dravid will not reapply for the position, leading to speculation about his successor. Among the potential candidates, former left-handed opening batsman Gautam Gambhir has emerged as the front-runner.
Sources indicate that Gambhir’s appointment as the new head coach of India is all but confirmed and will be formally announced by the end of June.

Gambhir’s impressive coaching record in the Indian Premier League (IPL)
Gambhir’s impressive coaching record in the Indian Premier League (IPL) has significantly bolstered his candidacy. This season, under his leadership, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) clinched the championship title, showcasing his ability to guide teams to success.
Prior to his stint with KKR, Gambhir was part of the coaching staff for Lucknow Super Giants, where he also demonstrated commendable leadership and tactical acumen, contributing to the team’s strong performances.
Strong contender for the head coach position
In light of these accomplishments, Gambhir’s name has naturally surfaced as a strong contender for the head coach position. According to a BCCI source, Gambhir has expressed a desire to select his own support staff, which may lead to changes in the current coaching setup.
Presently, the support staff includes Vikram Rathore as the batting coach, Paras Mhambrey as the bowling coach, and T Dilip as the fielding coach. Gambhir’s potential appointment signifies a new era for Indian cricket, as his strategic insights and leadership skills could bring fresh perspectives and approaches to the team.
