Sri Lanka spinner Wanindu Hasaranga ruled out of remainder of ODI series against India

Sri Lanka’s premier spinner, Wanindu Hasaranga has been ruled out of the remaining two ODIs of the ODI series against India due to a hamstring injury.

A statement released by Sri Lanka Cricket mentioned that Hasaranga suffered an injury to his left hamstring. As a result, he won’t be participating in the remainder of the ODI series. Leg-spinner Jeffrey Vandersay has been roped in as a replacement in the squad.

Notably, Hasaranga felt discomfort in his left hamstring during his final spell in the first ODI against India.

“Wanindu Hasaranga will miss the remainder of the ODI series, as the player has suffered an injury to his left hamstring,” a release stated.

“He experienced pain in his left hamstring while delivering the last ball of his 10th over during the first ODI.

“An MRI performed on the player, following this, confirmed the injury.

“Jeffrey Vandersay comes into the squad in place of Hasaranga.”

Wanindu Hasaranga put in an all-round effort in the first ODI against India

He played a pivotal role with both bat and ball in the first match, which ended in a tie. Hasaranga stitched a crucial partnership with Dunith Wellalage for the seventh wicket. He contributed 24 runs in 35 deliveries with the ball. Later, he returned with an exceptional spell of 3 for 58 in 10 overs.

Hasaranga first dismissed Virat Kohli for 24 and then took the wicket of a set batter in KL Rahul (31). The Sri Lankan spinner also sent Kuldeep Yadav back to the pavilion- a wicket which proved to be as important as the other two.

The first ODI between India and Sri Lanka resulted in a tie. Indian bowlers bowled at great lengths to restrict Sri Lanka to 230 in the first innings. Rohit Sharma’s half-centuries had set the tone for the run-chase. However, Sri Lanka kept chipping in with wickets at regular intervals.

However, Asalanka picked the last two wickets in consecutive balls to bundle India out for 230 as the match ended in a tie. The second ODI is scheduled to take place on Sunday at R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
