The IPL 2024 auction took place on Tuesday, December 19, at the Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai. The event saw all 10 teams making some interesting moves at the auction table. In a historical move, two teams (Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad) went on to breach the INR 20-crore mark to complete their squad.
At the very end of the auction, most of the teams had gaps to fill, and the accelerated process was in place. Some of the franchises managed to pick players on their base price, while a few fought a bidding war during this phase as well. Here are 3 budget picks in the IPL 2024 auction who teams could have avoided:
3. Ashton Turner (Lucknow Super Giants)
The 30-year-old middle-order batter is the captain of the Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash League. He has played over 180 T20 matches and has scored 2851 runs at an average of 25 and a strike rate of 141.20. Lucknow Super Giants picked Turner for his base price of INR 1 crore.
This will be the second stint for Turner in IPL. In 2019, he was picked by the Rajasthan Royals for his base price of INR 50 lakh. He was dismissed for a duck on his debut and became the first batter to make five consecutive ducks in T20s.
KL Rahul, the skipper, is highly likely to play in the middle order for the team in the upcoming edition. They already have Nicholas Pooran and Ayush Badoni in the middle order. Kyle Mayers had a great outing last season with the bat and might bat in the middle order. Hence, Turner might not get a chance to feature in the playing 11. LSG could have spent INR 1 crore for an uncapped Indian middle-order batter.

2. Mustafizur Rahman (Chennai Super Kings)
Mustafizur Rahman has played in the IPL for six seasons since making his debut in 2016. He had a breakout season in 2016 as he clinched 16 wickets in 16 matches while playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad. He won the Emerging Player award for this performance. Mustafizur picked 14 wickets in 2021 in 14 matches for the Rajasthan Royals.
He has taken 16 wickets in the remaining four seasons that he has played in the tournament. Since 2022, Rahman has taken 17 wickets in 24 T20Is for Bangladesh at an average of 36.23, an economy of 7.42, and a strike rate of 29.2. He has not been in the best of his form in recent times and CSK could have avoided picking him in the IPL 2024 auction.
1. Manish Pandey (Kolkata Knight Riders)
He was the first Indian batter to make a century in IPL and has made a return to Kolkata Knight Riders after playing for the franchise for four years. He won the trophy with the team in the 2012 and 2014 editions of the tournament and was the Player of the Match in the final in 2014.
KKR was never in need of a middle-order batter, and chances are Pandey might not feature in any of the games in the upcoming edition of the tournament. Shreyas Iyer, Nitish Rana, and Rinku Singh will likely be the first choice in the middle-order for the purple and gold franchise. Pandey has made 248 runs in 16 matches in IPL in the last two seasons at a strike rate of less than 110.
