The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have had a rich history of spending extravagantly in the auctions. These purchases have either been a hit or miss. But there’s one thing in common–none of them have allowed and inspired RCB to break the jinx and win a trophy. We look at the most expensive deals in the IPL auction by RCB and how they fared in the subsequent season.
#5 Chris Morris
Chris Morris has had bidders fight it out in the auction room in two consecutive seasons–2020 and 2021. In the 2020 auction, RCB paid Rs.10 crore for the Proteas allrounder. Morris could not live up to his price tag, with an average season with the ball and dreadful time with the bat. In 9 matches, he could only muster 34 runs, with a highest score of 25* and an average of 8.50. Morris claimed 11 wickets with the ball in hand.
#4 Ab De Villiers
Although Ab de Villiers does not top this list of the most expensive deals by RCB, his move from Delhi to Bangalore for Rs.11 crore is nothing less than a masterstroke. ABD, along with Virat Kohli, have been the heart and soul of the Bangalore franchise. Before he retired from IPL in 2021, ABD amassed 4522 runs at a stellar strike rate of 158.33.
#3 Yuvraj Singh, the only Indian on this list of most expensive deals by RCB
In 2014, RCB brought in India’s stylist left-handed middle-order batter into the mix. They paid Yuvraj Rs.14 crore to bolster the batting line-up and contribute with his left-arm spin bowling. He managed 376 runs in 14 matches, a below-average performance, as per his standards. With the ball, he scalped five wickets.
#2 Glenn Maxwell
Glenn Maxwell has blown hot and cold in the IPL, but for RCB, he has delivered an above-average performance. After being signed up for Rs.14.25 crore in the IPL auction 2021, Maxwell lived up to the expectations in the subsequent edition. Maxwell accumulated 513 runs in the season, the highest for RCB, and added three wickets to his tally.
#1 Kyle Jamieson tops this list of most expensive deals by RCB
On this list of the most expensive deals, Kyle Jamieson sits at the peak, with RCB emptying their purse by Rs.15 crore. However, he had an awful run with the bat, scoring 65 runs in 9 matches. With the ball, he added 9 wickets to his tally, an average showing given his price tag.
