Ravichandran Ashwin accuses ICC of changing ODI rules to nullify India’s spin dominance

Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has made a bold claim against the International Cricket Council (ICC), stating that the introduction of two new balls and the rule mandating five fielders inside the circle in ODIs was aimed at reducing India’s dominance in spin bowling.

Speaking on his YouTube channel ‘Ash Ki Baat’, Ashwin analyzed the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 Group B match between England and Afghanistan and expressed concerns over the future of ODI cricket.

“Is there any future for ODI cricket?” – Ravichandran Ashwin

Ashwin pointed out that ODI cricket has become monotonous, raising doubts about its relevance in the modern era. Comparing it to other formats, he highlighted the popularity of T20 cricket and suggested that Test cricket could thrive if first-class structures improved in teams like Afghanistan.

“Before this Afghanistan versus England match, I was wondering whether there is any future for ODI cricket. Let’s be very honest with it. In T20Is, there is so much crowd, and consumption is high because it ends within four hours. I feel Test cricket will excel more once the first-class structure of teams like Afghanistan will improve,” Ashwin said.

Ashwin further stated that ODI rule changes were implemented to weaken India’s spin advantage. He argued that introducing two balls per innings had eliminated reverse swing, impacting the balance of the game. The former spinner emphasized how these changes have affected bowling strategies.

“Until 2013-14, ODI cricket was played with one ball. Before 2015, the new rule was implemented where five fielders were allowed in the circle and two balls were introduced. I think, in many ways, that rule was to nullify India’s spin domination. That is just my take. I think that is impacting the game massively. Because reverse swing is gone from the game now. Role of finger spin was also reduced,” Ashwin added.

Ashwin also stated that the ODI World Cup 2027  in South Africa will be a crucial moment for the format’s future. He even suggested that ODI cricket should return to being played with a red ball.

“The 50-over World Cup (2027) in South Africa is going to be a real challenge for the ICC. It is at the brink of a decision being made. Because the game is going so slow, it’s meandering along. I have a question in my mind that is there a place for 50 overs in today’s cricket?”Ashwin noted.

The former spinner’s claims have fuelled discussions as fans and cricket experts reflect on the future of ODI cricket.
