Australian skipper Pat Cummins has been enjoying a great year so far. After leading the Australian team to the 2023 World Cup, he has now earned a fortune at the 2024 IPL Auction.
On Tuesday, he became the first player in the IPL auction history to breach the 20-crore mark and was eventually sold to Gujarat Titans for a massive sum of 20.50 crores.
A lot of franchises expressed interest in buying the services of the Australian fast bowler. In the end, it was Sunrisers Hyderabad, who managed to pick him up for the upcoming edition.
Cummins brings a lot of experience under his belt. He is not only a sharp bowler but also has a wealth of experience as far as pinch-hitting and captaincy skills are concerned.
SRH appointed South African batter Aiden Markram their new skipper last year, however, it won’t be a bad decision if they decide to hand over the leadership duties to Pat Cummins. In this article, we take a look at three reasons why Pat Cummins should be appointed as Sunrisers Hyderabad’s new skipper for IPL 2024:
1. Phenomenal record for Australia as captain
After taking over Test captaincy from Tim Paine, he led Australia to a 4-0 Ashes win against England. This year, in June, his team beat India in the World Cup Test championship final and lifted the WTC trophy. And now, after winning the 2023 World Cup, Cummins has, certainly, proved that he has all the ingredients to be a great leader.
2. Vast experience of playing in IPL
Pat Cummins has been part of the Indian Premier League for many years now. He has a good amount of experience playing in Indian conditions and as well in the IPL.
He made his debut in the cash-rich league back in the year 2014 and has played in six seasons, since. Besides, by making him the captain, the team can rotate the vast list of overseas batters they have at their disposal in the squad.
SRH could play Travis Head, Pat Cummins, Wanindu Hasaranga and can rotate Klaasen and Makram as per the conditions.
3. Can be a long-term prospect
Pat Cummins is, currently, 30 years and can easily play 3-4 years more if he stays fit. With the kind of experience he brings to the table and the resume he has built around him in the last couple of years as far the captaincy is concerned, he could well be made a long-term captaincy prospect for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League.
